Shoppers in Kirkintilloch flock to sign SSP Alternative to Cuts petition

SSP Campsie branch were in Kirkintilloch today, talking to shoppers about the alternatives we have to the butchers budget set out by the Twin Tories.

Even though we were rained off after around an hour, people flocked to the table to talk about their fears of how the heartless Tories and their lackey's, the Liberal Democrats budget will effect them. All of the people we spoke to thought our Alternative budget was a much more sensible way to deal with the capitalist, greedy bankers crisis.

The message is clear - the public will not stand for the debt being foisted upon the poor and the ordinary working people of this country - we didn't cause this! The rich must pay for their debt!

If you didn't get the chance to sign up to our Alternative Budget - we will be in Kirkie High Street on Wednesday 14th July from 12noon onwards -so come along!

I think what the SSP are doing across Scotland is nothing short of amazing. They are on our streets campaigning and when doing internet searches on various campaigns, theirs is the first name to come up. They are a real asset to Scotland where the fight against the bankers greed driven economic disaster is concerned.

However, I would like to see more co-ordination with other Socialist groups. I am aware of the history of the likes of the SWP and the miniscule CWI scottish branch, and their part in the near destruction of the superb left unity project the SSP is.

I am concerned, however, that the SWP's extreme sectarianism and its scottish members want to "out-do" the SSP is going to get into the way.

This became evident at the rally against cuts called by the NUJ and other unions. The SWP seem to have, after this rally was called and after an initial reticence to help build it, build their own rally from the various fronts they run. Their "counter-rally" rally took place in George Square, whilst the original one, well attended by various unions, took place on Buchanan Street. This made any observer scratch their head in wonder at the various peoples fronts rallying against cuts in their own ways. The sectarianism of the SWP was evident, by the way, for anyone like myself who knows their shortcomings and goings, for example, their "open mike" seemed to include only those they invited or front- the SSP people who I know attended the SWP's hastily cobbled together counter-rally, were not asked to speak. Indeed, much to mine and my partners horror, one prominent Maryhill member of the SWP walked past an SSP member and giving a sideway glance, saying, "we showed them, didn't we?" This behaviour is appalling.

I understand the reticence to work together what with the upcoming Sheridan trial. But now that "Solidarity," the party cobbled together by Tommy after he realised he would not win a leadership challenge in the SSP and those hanging on his coat-tails seeking political careers has died, the SWP (and indeed the strange CWI rebirth as "Scotlands Socialist Party") should be looking towards the SSP and its unity mechanisms in order to ensure the farce of two men and a dug standing on opposite street corners yelling, "splitters!"

The SWP should be engaging in grown up politics- not this nonsense of "outdoing" the SSP- or this competition of who is the best socialist. The best socialists will be those not allowing differences and past mistakes get in the way of unified action.
